Equity futures and global stocks tumbled Thursday while bonds and oil soared as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to order a military attack on Ukraine cast a pall over global markets. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 contracts slid about 2.5% and 3% respectively, signaling the latter, tech-heavy gauge may end up in a bear market. European futures shed over 4.5% and an Asia-Pacific equity gauge fell to the lowest since 2020. Shares slumped in Moscow after a trading suspension was lifted. Russian forces assaulted targets across Ukraine after Putin ordered an operation aimed at demilitarizing the country. Putin said Russia doesn’t plan to “occupy” its neighbor but that action was necessary after the U.S. and its allies crossed Russia’s “red line” by expanding the NATO alliance. Western powers condemned the military incursion and vowed to step up penalties on Russia -- President Joe Biden said the U.S. and its allies will impose “severe sanctions.” Crude and European natural gas surged on possible risks to Russian energy exports, with Brent oil scaling $100 a barrel for the first time since 2014. The flight to safety saw the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield fall below 1.90%. Gold hit the highest since early 2021.
Bitcoin Crashes 9% as Missiles Strike Kyiv, Airport Captured
The price of bitcoin continued to fall as global markets reacted with alarm to the expanding scale of war in Ukraine as missiles continue to reign down on its capital city in Kyiv and its airport was captured by airborne troops. BTC was down 9% to $34,555 as of the time of this writing, according to CoinGecko data. Russian President Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Ukrainian forces to surrender, and warned the U.S, and NATO from getting involved. "Anyone who tries to interfere with us, or even more so, to create threats for our country and our people, must know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never before experienced in your history,'' Putin said. “We are ready for any turn of events.” Read more: Bitcoin Wilts as Russia-Ukraine Tensions Push Gold to 8-Month High The US and its allies are expected to hit Russia with a broad sanction package in the coming hours. These sanctions are expected to target Russian banks, Putin's cabinet, and circle of business associates but are not expected to cut Russia off from the global financial system. Russia's former Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, has previously said that disconnecting Russia from SWIFT would be a declaration of war.

Major American theater chain AMC Theaters now accepts cryptocurrency payments, namely bitcoin (BTC), ethereum (ETH), litecoin (LTC), and bitcoin cash (BCH), according to an announcement from their CEO, Adam Aron. The next cryptocurrency to be accepted will be dogecoin (DOGE), he added. Auction house Sotheby’s will sell a pair of Banksy pieces next week and take bids in ETH. The auction house will put up “Love is in the Air” and “Trolley Hunters” at a live auction on November 18 in New York.
